How To Decorate Your Small Winnipeg Space

Turn your small space into the luxurious area you’ve always wanted with these style ideas and tips from Winnipeg interior designer, Zoe Henry

Small spaces can be difficult to style. There’s that struggle to fit all your furniture and other items in a way that doesn't clutter the area and looks beautiful and homey.

But it doesn’t have to be hard. With creative styling and the right furniture choices, you can turn your small space into a luxurious area you can’t wait to go home to or work in.

You don’t need a large space to make it into a home. A suite in our new infill development located at 30 University Crescent (30UC) proves just that. This beautiful suite’s interior is designed by Zoe Henry from Zoe Henry Designs. She gave us a quick rundown of how she styled this space.

The Cozy Living Room

30UC has a cool contemporary, industrial feel with a lot of natural light. The pieces picked for the space makes it feel clean and open.

“Go for a large sectional in a small space - it is comfortable and offers lots of seating,” says Zoe. “Black accents and A-symmetrical artwork create depth and interest in the living room, so it's not all a wash of white. The media unit from IKEA looks like a locker which added to the industrial look and is also great for storage. To make the space more interesting, you can add more character by adding poufs on the floor.”

Dine In Luxury

“A bistro or cafe table is great for a small space, and a round table makes it easy to squeeze a few extra people in when you have family and friends over. This marble table and black chairs from Article gives a luxurious feel but at a great price.”

The Drop Zone

It’s good to have a drop zone in your space. A drop zone is a place for you and members of your household to drop items that get brought into your home like mail, keys and umbrellas.

“We added a glass table that doesn't feel too clunky and is just enough space to drop your keys and bag.”

The Sleeping Quarters

It’s important to be strategic in designing a small bedroom. Use this tip to make this small space feel more spacious.

“The dark bed frame is a great way to create a focal point in a somewhat smaller bedroom. We chose wall mount sconces for the bedside lighting which is fun and functional. I like keeping the night stand casual with a simple side table that doesn't take up too much space.”

The Contemporary Bathroom

Finally, let’s take a look at the suite’s bathroom.

“We used a simple pattern for the shower curtain so it doesn't overwhelm the space and it matches the accents from around the rest of the suite, like the pillows on the couch. And why not add hanging art in the bathroom - this simple touch makes the space feel less utilitarian and more homey.”

3 Tips In Designing A Small Space

Here are Zoe’s top tips to keep in mind when decorating a small area.

  1. Don’t be afraid to think big. Just because a space is small doesn't mean you have to have small furniture - a large sectional and accent seating works for when it's just you or when you’re entertaining.
  2. Light and bright. Keeping your space light and bright helps to make any room feel bigger.
  3. Keep it cozy! Accent rugs, pillows and other small touches go a long way in making a comfortable home.
